Winter Twist 2:
Pointed Pen Italic with Josie Brown
Class Description
Sales for this class are now closed
As part of our 2021 Winter Twist series, we welcome you to join us for this wonderful opportunity to learn the art of pointed pen italic with Josie Brown.
This 2½ hour workshop will take the pointed nib on a journey to construct an elegant, yet authentic Italic script which imitates the broad-edged pen but allows for greater freedom, instant variation and plenty of personal expression.
We will begin with clear letterform construction, understanding how to gain the signature shaped cursive ligatures, the range of possible serifs and add in some alternative forms of capitals. We’ll look at aspects of spacing and how to build rhythm which will maintain consistency of form. This will be followed by a whistle-stop tour of the many possible variations – of size, weight, angularity, compression, etc., and then a set task using these in a natty and useful design brief. There’ll be examples to explore the variations – focusing on seasonal greetings offering ideas for this time of year.

The Teacher
Josie Brown was classically trained in calligraphy, heraldry, illumination and bookbinding and has worked in the field for 40 years – carrying out work to commission and for exhibitions, teaching and curriculum design. She is fascinated with historical tools and materials and enjoys exploring how these may be used alongside contemporary techniques for interesting effects. Currently, Josie is particularly interested in bridging the gap between the use of broad-edge tools and the pointed pen, hence this Pointed Italic.
