This six-month course will be your in-depth introduction to the fascinating world of Spencerian Script.

Working with the reknowned and supremely talented Mike Ward, you will get to learn the history behind this beautiful script, and familiarise yourself with the tools used to execute it.

Making the most of our extended learning time together, we will start by familiarising ourselves with the fundamental strokes and lowercase letterforms. Then, Mike will take you on a journey into the magical world of capital letters and explore entry and exit flourishes that can add a bit of personality to your script.

You will finish the workshop with the knowledge and confidence to further practice Spencerian at home, and will have an undeniable desire to use it in your own personal correspondence.

Sales for this course will end on Friday 15th January 2021 9pm GMT. The recordings will only be available to students who have purchased by this date. We will not be selling the recordings after the live sessions.

  • Oblique Pen Holder w/ adjustable metal flange

  • Flexible nib of choice (Nikko G, Hunt 101, Leonardt Principal EF, Gillot 303)

  • Smooth flowing ink of choice (Walnut, Diluted Sumi, Iron Gall)

  • Practice paper


Course structure

Over the course of six months, students will be introduced to Spencerian Script. Topics will cover the history of Platt Rogers Spencer, tools & equipment - oblique penholder, inks, papers, etc., fundamental concepts of Spencerian: curvature, movement, contrast, variability; muscularity of penmanship, posture, writing zone, letter height, size and the element of shading, foundation strokes, lowercase, capitals and basic entry and exit flourishes.

The pace will be determined by student progress, with the following being a starting point from which Mike will adjust his teaching. This is a rough guide to give you an idea of what will be covered, and is subject to change.

About Michael G. Ward

Mike Ward is a professional penman, located in Vancouver, Canada who specializes in Spencerian Script, Ornamental Penmanship and is known worldwide for his ornate signature designs. Mr Ward has studied under some of the very best penman, including Master Penmen Michael Sull, Harvest Crittenden, Jake Weidmann, and Barbara Calzolari

In addition to his penmanship practice, he has also pioneered the technique of debossing or hand foiling calligraphic designs onto leather, paper and other materials.

Mike is a professional artist, dancer and creator. He is passionate about teaching and sharing his love for the process of learning.

Terms

Your place is secured once your payment has been processed. As the workshop recordings will be made available to students for a limited time after the event, no refunds will be offered for non-attendance. In order to access the Facebook group and any associated commentary on posts in it, you will need to have an active Facebook account. This is the only platform for group-specific interaction during the workshop.

The Facebook Group

The EPPC will create a private Facebook group for the sole purpose of this online course. It will be available to students from two days before the workshop, until three weeks after the final session (28 June 2021). Two days before the class, students will be sent a link to request to join the group, and administrators will approve based on the name on your order confirmation email. If your Facebook name and order confirmation name don’t match, please email info@pointedpencollective.com to advise both your Facebook name and your order confirmation name.

This group is a space for you to post your work and chat with your fellow students. Mike will visit the group and dedicate time after each session to viewing posts and commenting. He will not be commenting on every post, but will be able to provide general feedback.

In the case of booking a workshop, we will use your email address to keep you informed of everything you need to know in the lead up to the event.
