Class Description

Hermann Kilian’s beautiful capitals have a special grace about them but also a unique tension within each letter.  He used them imaginatively, almost “knitting” lines of writing so they create an interesting texture. 

The first of two sessions will look at how these capitals are drawn and then we will write them with a pointed pen as well as consider how to “knit” a text successfully.

The second session will focus on a recently developed lower case based closely on Kilian’s capitals.  It is very different from other scripts and, in its standard form, fairly formal, although there is plenty of scope for varying it in terms of freedom, weight and compression.

Sales for the Pointed Pen Kilian Lettering workshop will end on Wednesday 23rd February at 9pm GMT. The recordings will only be available to students who have purchased by this date.

Suggested Materials

If you wish to work along with the josie, please have the following with you:

  • Layout / cartridge / Fabriano Accademia or your favourite paper (A4 size will be fine)

  • H pencil, sharpener, rubber

  • Ruler (30cm or longer)

  • Pen holder

  • Pointed nib (Brause EF66, Brause Rose nib, Nikko G, Zebra G, etc)

  • Either ink or diluted gouache / watercolour paint (Pelikan 4001, Walnut ink, iron gall)

  • A short text of about 10-12 words

If you are going to use thin / lightweight paper such as layout, then you can use the ruled lines handout that will be sent for use at the workshop.  If not – it will save time to have a page or two ruled up with lines at a suggested 8mm with a 12mm space between for the lower case Minuskilian.

 

The Teacher

Josie Brown was classically trained in calligraphy, heraldry, illumination and bookbinding and has worked in the field for 40 years – carrying out work to commission and for exhibitions, teaching and curriculum design. She is fascinated with historical tools and materials and enjoys exploring how these may be used alongside contemporary techniques for interesting effects. Currently, Josie is particularly interested in bridging the gap between the use of broad-edge tools and the pointed pen.
