Class Description
Unlock the art of FLOURISHING with our hands-on calligraphy class, designed to elevate your skills for both personal projects and professional ON-SITE WORK.
This class is especially designed for on-site jobs where you’re asked to adorn gift boxes or cards, but the skills you will learn will equip you with a versatile repertoire of flourishing techniques that you can then apply to many surfaces.
From the Foundations and Essential Techniques through Advanced Flourishing Techniques. This class will cover hand exercises, workspace setup, troubleshooting tips, linear flourishing (above and below text), dynamic hand excercises, oval compositions, geometric compositions.
By the end of this course, you’ll have the confidence and skill to apply these flourishing techniques to a variety of surfaces, making your calligraphy work truly stand out.

CLASS OUTLINE
Session one
• Exercises to loosen the hand and reinforce the movement we will use
• Essential setup for work
• Troubleshooting for different inks on different surfaces
• Linear flourishing above and below text
Session two
• Exercises to loosen the hand with changes on direction and speed
• Oval composition
• Geometric compositions to be filled (tree, candle, snowflake)

The Teacher
Jesús M. is an illustrator and calligrapher with experience in print media such as Reporte Índigo, Diario Deportivo Récord, Notimex, and Global Energy.
Winner of several Award of Excellence by the Society for News Design.
As a calligrapher, he has worked for brands such as Prada, Buchanan’s, Johnnie Walker, and Monte Xanic wines among others.
He is affiliated as a calligrapher with IAMPETH and with AMDI (Mexican Association of Illustrators) as an illustrator and he has taught national and international workshops.
His experience in digital and traditional media allows him to effectively communicate the message the client needs, from the generation of ideas, conceptualization, development, and application in different formats with ink, paint or pixels.
Suggested Materials
• Pointed nib of preference (Hunt 101, Leonardt Principal, Gillott 303)
• Straight pen holder
• Oblique penholder suggested for text work (depending on preference of the student)
• Iron gall or walnut ink for practice
• White ink for practice on color cardboard (Bleed Proof White is recommended but could be gouache or a different brand)
• Inkwell for mixing inks and water to keep clean the pen
• Smooth paper for practice with black ink (60 to 75 gsm)
• Color paper pieces for practice with white ink (Canson Mi’Teintes pastel 160 gsm or similar)
• Pencil HB
• Small ruler
