Masters of Copperplate:
A Masterclass
grasp the subtleties of copperplate
with sybille van zuylen (PENNA VOLANS)
Class Description
Copperplate is a derogatory name that was given to “pointed pen” calligraphy styles in the late 19th century. Today, that name can refer to a number of very similar hands, all derived from the English Round Hand, which was used to caption copperplate printed illustrations during the 18th and 19th century..
In this class, Sybille van Zuylen (Penna Volans) will guide you to investigate the changes that the Industrial Revolution brought to the English Round Hand, aim to understand the essence of the so-called Copperplate style, and learn to include its interesting nuances into our own practice.
To better grasp the subtleties of Copperplate, we will explore the works of 19th century European masters. Joseph Carstairs will teach us how to move freely and efficiently to write a flowy running hand which became the standard handwriting style of the century. The Spanish Ramón Stirling and the French Jules Girault will help us unlock variations of capitals and the tricky art of flourishing. We will encounter a few other names along the way, which will tell us more about 19th century writing and lettering aesthetics.
